Building Bridges to Service Excellence!
Shortly after Hüseyin Kizilagac became a team member of BDP Project Logistics in Germany, we were presented with an opportunity to bid on a chemical plant expansion project for Quinn Chemical in Leuna, Germany. The challenges presented by the project were immense due to the size of the cargo, the short delivery window and the over-abundant infrastructure present in Germany. During the proposal stage, Hüseyin worked tirelessly to figure out ways to submit a bid which would differentiate us from the competition and one of the ideas he came up with, in working with Emanuel Scerra-Regional Director, Europe-BDP/Project Logistics, was to build a bridge over a high speed rail line which prevented direct access to the plant.
The competitor’s alternative called for lifting the cargoes over the rail line, which due to the length of the cargoes, was impossible; hence, their proposal called for cutting the pieces and having them re-assembled after delivery.
While proposing to build a bridge may sound innovative and a great concept, the real hard work came upon business award. Earlier this year when the largest pieces of cargo arrived in Germany and started their week-long trips from the port to the jobsite, Hüseyin worked tirelessly and spent many days with little more than four hours sleep. Since the Leuna job site is about four hours from Hüseyin’s home, he did not see his family for more than six weeks, all the while coordinating overnight transports, securing permits with government authorities, supervising the building of alternative roads, and helping to produce a professional PR video of the project.
While customer satisfaction, timely, incident free and safe delivery of cargo was of foremost importance, Hüseyin also worked hard to find ways to reduce the overall project logistics cost. As it turned out, the project was delivered without incident, without damage and one month ahead of schedule while not exceeding the project budget.
Hüseyin and the BDP PL Germany team were recognized by the customer in March of 2008, when we were invited to a St Patrick’s Day dinner and asked to run the PR video which we developed for all 250 attendants to be seen. Maybe good the customer did not know that Hüseyin spend 22 hours of straight work prior to the dinner to finalize the video on time.
A few months thereafter, the one year long project ended and Hüseyin saw his efforts come to an end by coordinating the disassembling of the bridge and by helping Emanuel and I collect all outstanding funds owed BDP Project Logistics.
The Leuna project was not only the most technically challenging project ever handled by BDP; it also aided us in building a good reputation in the European market - important for a two-year-old company; and Hüseyin, was the BDP PL team member who excelled during its execution and whose efforts made it all possible.
Peter Huels-CEO BDP/Project Logistics Asia Pacific commented that,” in our quest to build a superior project logistics organization globally and to advance our mission of delivering “uncommon” value, BDP Project Logistics needs to have a team in place where every member is an outstanding performer. Hüseyin is the perfect embodiment of such a star performer – hard working, always wearing his creative hat, 110% commitment, and a team player par excellence. It is indeed a pleasure to have him on our team and to work alongside him.”
